Occombe - Fairwinds Association, Marldon
OCCOMBE House and Fairwinds Special Development Centre share the same site in Preston Down Road, near the junction with the ring road. They are funded and staffed by Torbay Social Services Directorate. Fairwinds Day Centre opened in 1978, the ceremony being performed by Cilia Black. Although the centre is situated on the boundary between Marldon and Torbay we have enjoyed a close relationship with the village using many of the facilities it provides. Some of the staff have also been Marldon residents. A highlight of our year is the annual carol service held in the parish church led by the vicar of Marldon, Rev.P.Bellenes who has a very special rapport with the two establishments.
Because of the enormous demands on the Social Services budget it became obvious that extra funds would be needed. The OCCOMBE FAIRWINDS Association was formed from staff and parents and is a registered charity. After nearly 25 years of fund raising many 'extras' have been provided, including such things
Music Centres, Cameras, Video Camera, Musical Equipment. The landscaping of the gardens in Occombe House and Fairwinds with provision of garden furniture etc. Conversion of a respite care unit in Occombe House with a legacy received. Special Equipment for use by Physiotherapists and. other professionals. Recently a Lottery bid was successful for a minibus. Each year grants are made by the Association towards Christmas.
